Comprehensive Surgical CPT Coding Training

Course Objectives

Applying codes from the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system to procedures in the hospital setting is a challenging and complex process. Because the coding system was developed by physicians for physician use, interpreting the guidelines for application in the hospital can be very confusing. To help you through that process, TCG presents “A Comprehensive Guide to Surgical CPT Coding,” an in-depth and easy to understand training program aimed toward the hospital coder.

This educational program includes a training manual with over 900 pages of anatomical, procedural, and coding information, including illustrations. Complete with guidelines set forth by the American Medical Association (AMA) and other regulatory agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), this program is designed for coders at any level who are involved in both the hardcoding and softcoding process. The training manual also serves as a reference manual in day-to-day coding operations.

The program includes 13 modules covering all aspects of surgical CPT coding and interventional radiology. Each module includes review exercises and actual case studies to maximize the learning experience. The training manual also contains a glossary of key terminology and common acronyms as well as answer keys for case studies and review exercises.

Course Benefits

Upon completion of this training course, the attendee will be able to:
  • Describe common procedures reported with CPT codes.
  • Describe uses for Level II HCPCS codes.
  • Describe the HCPCS coding system and when to use Level I versus Level II codes.
  • Explain when to use CPT and HCPCS modifiers and which are appropriate in the hospital setting.
  • Discuss the process of looking up codes in the CPT codebook.
  • Describe basic anatomy for the major body systems addressed in CPT.
  • Complete realistic case study scenarios and discuss the answers.
